GM labelling on the menu in the UK

from European Vegetarian, Issue 1/2000

Genetically modified foods and ingredients have dominated the news headlines in recent months.

Regulations for all restaurants, pubs, canteens and catering premises to identify any GM ingredients in the foods they sell came into force at the end of September 1999. These regulations require all of the UK's 500,000 catering premises to show which dishes on their menus contain GM soya or maize and ensure that the staff are able to inform customers regarding which dishes are affected. Caterers will be required to meet the regulations or face a fine up to £5,000 for non-compliance.
