This conference of vegetarians from all continents calls on governments, the medical establishment, the farming and meat industries, the European Commission and the World Trade Organisation to take note of our concerns:
- The factory farming of animals causes severe suffering to the animals and must be abandoned
- Intensive animal farming causes environmental degradation and is not ecologically sustainable
- Intensive farming in Europe relies on important feed grains and soya, much of which is grown on land in developing countries, whereas this land would be better utilized growing food for the people of those areas
- Medical research proves conclusively, that a vegetarian diet has great health benefits, can be highly beneficial in preventing, treating and even reversing cardiovascular disease and in preventing some cancers
- In the long term, a meat-based diet will be unable to sustain the increased global population. With falling water table levels and the necessity to prevent further degradation of forest and wild lands, the agricultural production of the world should be directed to providing affordable and healthy plant-based food for people rather than feed for animals in intensive farms.
We therefore call on the World Trade Organisation and the European Union and its commissions to stop financial subsidies to inhumane and environmentally unsustainable farming systems. Instead, direct financial support must be given to farming methods which are gentle on both animals and the environment and which produce food for direct human consumption.
In addition, we call on compassionate and caring people everywhere to join us in our celebration of a delicious and healthy diet based on the natural foods of the earth, a diet which avoid animal suffering, is gentle on the earth and can bring health benefits to all and, most importantly, has the potential to feed the global population into the future.
