Dr Christian Barnard is dead.
Notorious for his animal experiments (which proved nothing), proceeding with the first human heart transplant when others knew of the dangers, seeing his first patient die in 18 days and his second in less than 18 months, and attempting to sue medical historian Hans Ruesch, Barnard became the "darling" of the world`s press.
So "successful" was Barnard that other tried to emulate him - with same miserable failures... so much so after others tried and failed in the UK that Britain, in fact, "banned" heart transplants in the 1970s... so much for all of the claims made that animal experiments led to this operation. It was to be clinical experience and the lessons learned that transplant survival rates began to improve pro-rata to the number performed.
I cannot help wondering whether Barnard suffered the same fate as the arch-vivisector Claud Bernard, who on his deathbed was haunted by images of the animals he tortured and remarked that this was justice for the pain he had inflicted.
Those who are informed will not mourn the loss of Barnard, but the animals and patients who died at his hands.
A personal comment by Steve.
